Hindman’s Stepping Into Tomorrow to Merge Top Visual Art & Design

CHICAGO – Hindman Auctions will present Stepping Into Tomorrow on July 29, 2021. The auction will merge top visual art and design, offering an impressive array of paintings, prints, drawings, and sculpture by American and European artists and designers from across the 20th century. Fine art highlights include works by KAWS, Sol Lewitt, Cindy Sherman, Robert Gober, Amy Sillman, HC Westermann, Bruce Nauman, Christina Ramberg, and Dennis Hopper. The design offering’s noteworthy highlights include thirty-four works of studio pottery and art glass, with exceptional pieces by Dale Chihuly, Jon Kuhn, Paul Stankard, and Christopher Ries. The sale will also include forty iconic pieces of furniture and lighting, with American classics from George Nelson, Florence Knoll, Charles and Ray Eames, and Eero Saarinen in addition to international selections from Roberto Monsani, Shiro Kuramata, and Jean Nouvel.

FINE ART OFFERINGS

Standout artists represented in the July auction include Brooklyn-based artist KAWS, who has become known for his work across art and popular culture that has been attractive across multiple markets. KAWS’ URGE portfolio, comprised of color screenprints on Saunders Waterford paper (lot 20; estimate: $40,000-60,000), will be offered. The URGE series is currently highlighted in a dedicated room at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in its KAWS: WHAT PARTY exhibition. Additional noteworthy works include Amy Sillman’s Prize (lot 9; estimate: $15,000-25,000); Mauro Perucchetti’s vibrant and whimsical Sex in the City shoe display (lot 95A; estimate: $30,000-50,000); Fritz Koenig’s Schaukel (lot 25; estimate: $20,000-40,000); and Dennis Hopper’s Early Painting (lot 114; estimate: 5,000-7,000).

The fine art selection will also include works sold to benefit the acquisition fund of the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields. Among this offering are works by Salvador Dalí, Corneille (Cornelis van Beverloo), Pablo Serrano, David Hare, Roger Bissiere, Rinaldo Paluzzi, Étienne Hajdu, Tony Rosenthal, Luciano Minguzzi, and Etienne Beothy.

MODERN DESIGN OFFERINGS

Noteworthy modern design items include Dale Chihuly’s five-piece purple Persian Set with red and green lips from 1988 (lot 228; estimate: $6,000-8,000). Dale Chihuly’s exuberant and expertly crafted glass sculptures can be found in renowned institutions. Highly collectible works such as this set from the artist's iconic 'Persian' series are the perfect noteworthy addition to any interior. Roberto Monsani’s Illuminated Wall Unit from 1970s (lot 52; estimate: $2,000-4,000) embraces modernity and originality of the era. Its ability to simultaneously display, conceal, and hide, as well as illuminate, illustrates Monsani’s innovation. The minimalist LI-DA dining table by famed architect Jean Nouvel (lot 202; estimate: $1,000-2,000), best known for his designs for the National Museum of Qatar and the Louvre Abu Dhabi, is another outstanding work.

Bidding for the July 29 auction begins at 10 am CT. Bidders will be able to participate online through the Digital Bid Room, Hindman’s recently launched online and mobile bidding platform, as well as additional online platforms. Private viewings of the auction will be available at Hindman’s Chicago office by appointment.
