The autumn sales series at Sotheby’s Hong Kong attracted a new generation of art collectors, with 25% of all buyers aged under 40 years old. 20 auctions held over five days achieved US $426 million–the sixth consecutive Hong Kong series to exceed US $400 million. A record series of Contemporary Art sales was led a monumental Yoshitomo Nara canvas that sold for nearly five times the artist’s previous auction record. Liu Ye’s ‘Smoke’ from The Gillion Crowet Collection was another record-setter, while the Modern Art category was led by a record-breaking final masterpiece by Sanyu and 10 works by Zao Wou-Ki. Consignor confidence and strong buyer demand was in evidence across all categories, including Wine, Watches, Jewellery, Chinese Works of Art and Chinese Paintings.
