Largest Artwork by RETNA Sets New Artist Auction Record

RETNA, Serenity of the mind States Moments of dark days allows Soaring like a search light -High-, 2012

DALLAS, Texas – The largest artwork by Urban artist RETNA set a world artist auction record when a piece measuring 97- by 103-inches sold for $93,750 at Heritage Auctions on Monday.

Serenity of the mind States Moments of dark days allows Soaring like a search light -High-, an acrylic, enamel and crystalline on canvas artwork, which was executed in 2012. The price breaks the artist’s previous record, which was set by Heritage in December 2018.

The piece garnered 14 bids and claimed top lot honors in Monday’s Urban Art Auction, which realized $534,045 to exceed its $447,000 high estimate. The sale was 98 percent sold by value and 95 percent sold by lot.

The auction’s innovative marketing campaign included a groundbreaking collaboration with Bloomingdale's at the department retailer’s flagship store in Midtown Manhattan. The partnership featured a tightly curated, yet comprehensive, presentation of more than 40 pieces on display throughout the 4th floor of Bloomingdale's New York.

“Demand for RETNA right now told us this piece was heading into record territory,” said Leon Benrimon, Director of Modern & Contemporary Art at Heritage Auctions.

Additional artist highlights include:

·         Kate Moss Fragile, 2013, by Mr. Brainwash: $21,250

·         Coco Chanel 1000%, from the 2006 collaboration between BE@RBRICK and Chanel: $21,250

·         Untitled, polyptych, 2016, by RETNA: $20,000.00

Heritage Auctions’ next two Modern & Contemporary Art auctions take place in April and May. On April 16, itsSignature Prints & Multiples Auction will be held in Dallas and the house’s Modern & Contemporary Art Signature Auction happens in Beverly Hills on May 23.
