On September 12, the museum opens its new permanent collection of modern and contemporary architecture and design. Past Forward: Architecture and Design at the Art Institute is a dynamic, issue-driven installation drawn from the museum’s world-class holdings. From visionary architectural drawings and innovative industrial designs to user-generated products and speculative research, the exhibition explores the many fundamental roles of architecture and design in our history and culture.
In 1888/9 in Arles in the South of France, Vincent van Gogh painted several versions of one of the most famous paintings ever made – his 'Sunflowers'. Today five 'Sunflowers' paintings are located in museums across the globe and have never been united. Until now that is. On 14 August 2017, in a world first, all those 'Sunflowers' will come together in a ‘virtual exhibition’ bringing the paintings together in a way the artist could never have imagined.
'The Fortress of Königstein from the North' by Bellotto, which was due to be exported from Britain, has been saved for the nation and goes on display in Trafalgar Square today (Tuesday 22 August 2017).
On September 11 and 13, Bonhams New York will offer three auctions of The Dr. Sylvan and Faith Golder Collection of Fine Chinese Snuff Bottles, Twentieth Century Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, and Japanese Works of Art. The sales present an array of rare and exquisite ceramics, jades, metalwork, prints, and paintings, many offered from important private collections including property from the Ackerman collection, the collection of Judi Blum and the collection of Dr. Sylvan and Faith Golder.
Christie’s and Andreas Siegfried will present Tropicana, an exhibition pairing works from the multi-faceted practices of Anton Alvarez and Jonathan Trayte at 103 New Bond Street, timed to coincide with London Design Festival. A tropical landscape of sculptures and furniture, made specifically for the space, will run throughout the gallery, set amongst dense foliage.
Christie's announces Photographs from The Museum of Modern Art, a selection of over 400 photographs to be sold at Christie's New York starting with four highlights in the October 10th Photographs Day Sale. A subsequent series of online auctions will be held in October, concurrently with the live Day Sale, and in December 2017, as well as January and April 2018.
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF) are proud to host the first major exhibition of Gottfried Lindauer’s portraits of the Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand, ever assembled in the United States. A key cultural figure in New Zealand, Lindauer was one of the country’s most pioneering and prolific painters.
This year marks the 400th anniversary of the birth of one of the most celebrated painters of the Spanish Golden Age, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617–1682). A number of international exhibitions are planned to pay tribute to the artist’s achievements, the first of which will be presented this fall and winter at The Frick Collection.
The next Atelier with Alina Cho will feature designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler, on Thursday, October 12, at 7:00 p.m. at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. American design talent standouts, Jack and Lazaro rocked the fashion boat in July with their journey across the Atlantic to show their Spring/Summer 2018 ready-to-wear collection during the Fall/Winter 2017 haute couture shows in Paris.
